General Trends Across the Most Popular US Websites by Traffic
For the second month in a row, traffic to the top 100 websites slipped, with an overall MoM (month-over-month) change of -1.2%. There is plenty of room for optimism, however, despite some websites seeing notable declines.
Google maintained its dominance as the web’s most-visited site, and mostly held steady this month with a -1.2% dip. Close behind was youtube.com, which saw a 2.4% increase. Despite losing its third-place position these past few months to facebook.com (-4.1%), reddit.com also saw an increase of 8.4%.
Other social media websites saw strong growth in April, including tiktok.com (6.4%), linkedin.com (2.2%), and instagram.com (1.4%). Twitch.tv, in addition, saw an impressive 8.9% jump.
News websites experienced more turbulence, however, with top sites like nytimes.com and cnn.com seeing rises of 7.5% and 0.7%, respectively. Other established news sites didn’t fare so well. Foxnews.com, for instance, saw a decrease of -4.3%. In addition, msn.com (-1.9%), nypost.com (-4.3%), and bbc.com (-6.2%) all saw declines.
Streaming services also struggled this month, with hulu.com (-6.7%), netflix.com (-5%), and max.com (-8.8%) all declining significantly. Spotify.com did see a modest bump (0.5%), but other losses suggest a shift in the market landscape.
Similarly, April was a turbulent month for retail. While giants like amazon.com (-0.5%), walmart.com (-2.7%), and target.com (-1.8%) mostly remained stable, some online retailers, like homedepot.com (11.7%) and lowes.com (15.8%), continued with anticipated spring-season jumps.
Other notable changes include gamestop.com, whose traffic slipped by a whopping -12.4%, and bestbuy.com, whose traffic dipped nearly -10%. Overall, the transition into summer should mean some settling in for previously volatile sites. Expect vacation and travel sites to continue their climb, as well as further slowdowns to streaming services and education.
It’s Not Just About the Traffic
Although observing position changes through traffic volume can help to analyze global trends and benchmark your performance against the competition, Semrush’s Traffic Analytics reports also include important metrics to keep watch on:
- Mobile vs. desktop traffic share shows which devices people use to enter a site page. When doing competitive benchmarking, this metric can help to determine whether you need to implement certain steps (e.g. ensure further mobile optimization or come up with additional desktop traffic generation tactics) to strengthen your traffic acquisition strategy and stay in the game.
- Number of pages per visit, average visit duration, and bounce rate reflect the quality of site content. If you spot that your competitor’s website shows better performance, it's a sign that you have to work on your SEO and content strategy, comparing the structure, content, and design of your site pages against theirs.
Insights on the Most Popular Sites in the US by Industry
To spot more granular market patterns and provide more useful insights, we decided to show the leading U.S. websites in terms of traffic volume by different industries: Education, Fashion, Travel, Retail, Teamwork, Social Networks, Media, Food Delivery, and Streaming Services.
Education
The Most Visited Websites - US, Education Category
The education sector experienced a booming April, with an average MoM (month-over-month) traffic uptick of 15%. In fact, 90% of top sites saw traffic increases, and three saw gains of over 30%. Some of this growth can be attributed to final exams, but the trends indicate a serious consumer reliance on digital education.
Leading the pack this month was clever.com, who saw a staggering traffic jump of over 45%. Blackboard.com was close behind, with a gain of 34%, and infinitecampus.org posted a similarly strong 31.3%. Other sites like pearson.com (10.7%), instructor.com (2.9%), quizlet.com (4.5%), and schoology.com (3.8%) also saw gains, suggesting broad strength across the board in April.
Grammarly.com was the lone loser this month, with a modest traffic decline of -2.8%.
In conclusion, the category witnessed a staggering uptrend in engagement, led by platforms specializing in study aids and course management. Although sites will take a hit once school lets out this summer, it’s clear that the sector is thriving.
