General Trends Across the Most Popular US Websites by Traffic
Top 100 sites saw mixed performance in January, with a lot of fluctuation across different categories. Overall, platforms saw an average month-over-month (MoM) traffic increase of 0.6%, indicating only slight growth in general engagement.
E-commerce sites struggled, likely due to the post-holiday slowdown. Target.com, for instance, saw a staggering -34.9% decline, and walmart.com (-21.4%) didn’t have it much easier. In addition, etsy.com (-17.2%), amazon.com (-14.2%), and ebay.com (0.7%) also saw declines.
Logistics company sites, like usps.com (-9.9%) and fedex.com (-20.3%), took similar traffic hits, reflecting the same post-holiday cooldown.
On the weather and entertainment front, there was some reason for optimism. Weather.com, for instance, posted a 16.9% uptick, and platforms like xhamster.com (19.6%) and aniwatchtv.to (45.4%) saw substantial growth. On the other hand, streaming platforms like netflix.com (0.9%) and hulu.com (-4.8%) didn’t fare as well.
Social media sites like instagram.com (5.4%) and reddit.com (4.6%) showed encouraging trends, while facebook.com (-2.1%) and twitter.com (-1.2%) saw engagement declines. X.com (12.2%), however, saw an impressive bump.
Teamwork and education platforms had a mixed month as well. Office.com (-1.2%) and instructure.com (-9%) posted declines, while microsoftonline.com (8.1%) and zoom.us (8.2%) showed traffic gains. Other tech platforms, like github.com (7.3%) and adobe.com (15.7%), also had momentum.
Lastly, news and media sites varied in performance. Cnn.com (7.4%), theguardian.com (7%), and foxnews.com (8.7%) all saw gains, while nytimes.com (-4.1%) and nypost.com (-6.4%) struggled. Other sites, like dailymail.co.uk (0.2%), held steady.
Overall, January saw a somewhat expected post-holiday trend, with e-commerce and logistics sites mostly taking hits. Other categories, like weather, social media, and tech, did show some growth. As the year progresses, we’re interested in seeing which sectors capitalize on momentum, and which can recover from January’s shifts.
It’s Not Just About the Traffic
Although observing position changes through traffic volume can help to analyze global trends and benchmark your performance against the competition, Semrush’s Traffic Analytics reports also include important metrics to keep watch on:
- Mobile vs. desktop traffic share shows which devices people use to enter a site page. When doing competitive benchmarking, this metric can help to determine whether you need to implement certain steps (e.g. ensure further mobile optimization or come up with additional desktop traffic generation tactics) to strengthen your traffic acquisition strategy and stay in the game.
- Number of pages per visit, average visit duration, and bounce rate reflect the quality of site content. If you spot that your competitor’s website shows better performance, it's a sign that you have to work on your SEO and content strategy, comparing the structure, content, and design of your site pages against theirs.
Insights on the Most Popular Sites in the US by Industry
To spot more granular market patterns and provide more useful insights, we decided to show the leading U.S. websites in terms of traffic volume by different industries: Education, Fashion, Travel, Retail, Teamwork, Social Networks, Media, Food Delivery, and Streaming Services.
Education
The Most Visited Websites - US, Education Category
January was a positive month for the education sector, with quite a few sites seeing impressive growth. Overall, top sites saw a 5.7% traffic increase, with 60% of sites seeing bumps of at least 5%.
The biggest winners last month were schoology.com and mheducation.com, which saw impressive gains of 29.9% and 29.4%, respectively. Pearson.com (15.3%), duolingo.com (11.8%), and powerschool.com (7.1%) posted strong numbers as well. And khanacademy.org (5.4%) wasn’t far behind.
On the downside, several major sites did see traffic dips. Goguardian.com, for instance, saw a staggering -25.4% drop. Also struggling last month were quizlet.com (-16.9%), blackboard.com (-10.9%), and instructure.com (-9%), indicating a potentially worrisome trend, though.
The beginning of the new semester brought shifts in traffic across all education platforms. But what’s surprising is that some saw their engagement fall. As students and educators settle into routines, we’re interested in seeing how well these sites can bounce back.
