General Trends Across the Most Popular US Websites by Traffic
Top 100 websites showed positive traffic growth overall, despite many categories seeing negative results. Traffic to top sites increased by a month-over-month (MoM) average of 2.3%, indicating a broad uptick in engagement on the whole.
Big winners in July included bing.com and samsung.com, both of which saw traffic surges of around 20%. Traffic to usatoday.com grew by an impressive 19.4%, and theguardian.com posted a similar 12.6% uptick.
Things were much tougher for espn.com, as traffic to its platform slipped by more than -17%. Dailymail.co.uk also saw a traffic decline of -16.9%, and home improvement sites experienced a late summer pullback: traffic to lowes.com and homedepot.com fell by -14.8% and -9.9%, respectively.
Maintaining its long-standing position at the top, google.com held mostly steady at -1.7%. Other web leaders, such as reddit.com and youtube.com, also posted numbers around -2%.
E-commerce and retail, in particular, were volatile spaces last month. Traffic to sites like ebay.com (-9.3%), etsy.com (-2.8%), and target.com (-1.7%), for instance, showed worrisome signs. However, bestbuy.com (7.6%), temu.com (7.6%), and walmart.com (0.7%) all posted gains.
On the tech front, results varied widely. Microsoft.com and apple.com both saw traffic dip around -2%, and openai.com posted a tough -8.1% decrease in traffic. However, x.com saw a 9.3% surge, and traffic to office.com grew by 3.8%.
News and media platforms also showed mixed results. Nbcnews.com, for instance, saw traffic to its site increase by a whopping 23.6%, and CNN.com (14%) grew significantly also. On the negative side, nytimes.com saw a -2.16% drop, and foxnews.com (-1.5%) saw a very slight decline.
There’s a lot to track going forward. While last month’s numbers suggest some reason for optimism, certain big players have lost serious gains. Will media-centered sites capitalize on the upcoming American election? Will e-commerce sites continue their slide? August will answer more than a few questions about how successfully certain platforms can win back engagement.
It’s Not Just About the Traffic
Although observing position changes through traffic volume can help to analyze global trends and benchmark your performance against the competition, Semrush’s Traffic Analytics reports also include important metrics to keep watch on:
- Mobile vs. desktop traffic share shows which devices people use to enter a site page. When doing competitive benchmarking, this metric can help to determine whether you need to implement certain steps (e.g. ensure further mobile optimization or come up with additional desktop traffic generation tactics) to strengthen your traffic acquisition strategy and stay in the game.
- Number of pages per visit, average visit duration, and bounce rate reflect the quality of site content. If you spot that your competitor’s website shows better performance, it's a sign that you have to work on your SEO and content strategy, comparing the structure, content, and design of your site pages against theirs.

Education
The Most Visited Websites - US, Education Category
July proved to be a challenging month for the education sector, with most top sites experiencing significant declines. Overall, the category saw a month-over-month (MoM) decrease of 6.8%, with 80% of sites experiencing traffic dips.
Cambridge.org suffered the most, with traffic plunging by -17.2%. Other category leaders like blackboard.com (-13.8%), quizlet.com (-13.3%), and instructure.com (-12.3%) also faced sharp declines. Close behind, chegg.com saw a decrease of -10.5%, while quillbot.com (-9.7%), pearson.com (-3%), and wiley.com (-2.4%) also experienced dips.
On the positive side, khanacademy.org and duolingo.com were the only winners, with traffic increases of 10.8% and 2.9%, respectively.
Overall, July was tough for the sector's largest players, with many sites struggling to retain users. However, the success of sites like khanacademy.org and duolingo.com suggests that there are still opportunities for growth, even during slower months. Additionally, many sites can look forward to the school openings in August, which may help boost traffic.
